How to Measure Your Head for the Perfect Wig Cap Size

The right cap size is the difference between a wig that feels like your own hair and one that slips or squeezes all day. The good news, measuring your head takes about five minutes and all you need is a soft tape measure.
Why cap size matters
A cap that is too big will shift and lift at the edges. A cap that is too small causes headaches and pressure. A well fitted cap sits snug and secure, so your wig looks natural and stays put with confidence.
What you need
- A soft, flexible tape measure (the kind used for sewing).
- A mirror, or a friend to help.
- Your hair flat, braided down or in the style you will wear under the wig.
The three key measurements
Take these with the tape snug but not tight.
- Circumference: measure all the way around your head, across the forehead just above the ears and around the nape.
- Front to nape: measure from your front hairline straight over the top of your head to the nape of your neck.
- Ear to ear: measure from the top of one ear, over the crown, to the top of the other ear.
Matching your measurement to a cap size
Circumference is the most important number. As a general guide:
- Small: around 21 inches (about 53 cm).
- Medium: around 22 inches (about 56 cm). This fits most people.
- Large: around 23 inches (about 58 cm) and above.
If you fall between two sizes, most wigs have adjustable straps inside the cap, so sizing down slightly and tightening the strap gives the most secure fit.
A few extra tips
- Braid your hair down as flat as possible before measuring, so the cap sits close to your scalp.
- If you wear a wig grip or cap underneath, measure with it on.
- When in doubt, contact us with your measurements and we will recommend the right size.
